Can I replace a broken spring myself?

This is the one job in the trade genuinely worth not attempting. Torsion springs hold the door's entire weight under tension and release it instantly if they let go. It is the most common serious injury in this trade.

Why replace both springs when one broke?

They are installed together and wear together. Fitting one new spring beside an old one puts the load onto the old one, which then fails soon after, and you pay the call-out twice.

Repair the opener or replace it?

A gear or a trolley on a good opener is worth repairing. If the opener is fifteen years old, has no rolling code and no photo-eye safety, replacement buys real safety rather than just quiet.

Is an insulated door worth it?

On an attached garage or one you use as a workshop, yes -- it changes the temperature of the room and the rooms above it, and insulated doors are quieter and stiffer. On a detached, unheated garage the case is much weaker.

How long should a door and opener last?

The door itself commonly 20 to 30 years. Springs are rated in cycles: about 10,000 for standard, which is roughly seven years of normal use. Openers usually 10 to 15.
