Will pressure damage my siding or my paint?
It can, which is why most of a house is not pressure washed at all. Siding, painted wood and shingles are soft washed -- cleaned with a solution at roughly garden-hose pressure and rinsed. Pressure is for concrete and masonry. If somebody is putting a high-pressure wand on your siding, that is the thing to ask about.
How long does it stay clean?
It depends on whether the growth was killed or just removed. A rinse can look identical on the day and be green again in months, because the organic growth was never treated. Properly treated, a north-facing wall in this climate generally goes one to three years, and shaded surfaces come back sooner than sunny ones.
Can my roof be pressure washed?
No. Asphalt shingles are protected by their granules and pressure strips them, which shortens the roof's life while making it look better for a season. Roofs are soft washed. Any quote that says pressure washing a shingle roof is worth reading carefully.
What about my plants?
Beds and shrubs closest to the walls take the runoff, so they are wet down before the work and rinsed afterwards, and sensitive plantings are covered. It is a normal part of the job rather than something to arrange separately.
Do I need to be home?
Usually not, as long as there is access to an outside tap and to the areas being cleaned. What does help is a walk round beforehand to point out anything that has been damaged before, because a pre-existing split or a loose board is much easier to agree on in advance.
